You’ve got something you LOVE to do, don’t you?
Maybe it’s a hobby you’re ever so slightly obsessed with… or maybe it’s a small business you’re running. Making cakes, photography, cooking, raising kids? Whatever it is, you spend a lot of time on it, right?
And I bet you’ve got something to say about it, too. Maybe a few people have even told you that you should start your own blog.
My advice? DO IT. Start your own blog, right now.
All you need is fifteen minutes, these next easy steps, and you’ll have a blog to call your very own!

How to Start Your Own Blog
There are basically three simple steps that will get your blog up and running:
- Setting up your domain name & hosting
- Installing WordPress
- Picking your Theme (The fun part!)
*Special note – if you’re still scared of doing this on your own ’cause you’ve got “double-clicking” down and that’s about it, skip right to the last paragraph of this post. There’s a great company listed there who will do this all for you, inexpensively, and they are a dream to work with.
1. Domain Name & Hosting
First, head on over to Bluehost and click on the green “Get Started Now” button. When asked to pick your plan level, it’s actually a good idea to go with the Starter Plan. That one’s paid in one lump sum instead of monthly, but it’ll save you a bunch of money in the end.
YAYY!! So now, you get to pick what you want your domain name to be! (Come on, you know you’ve been thinkin’ ’bout this for a while.)
Mine is mcgreevycakes.com (in case you, uh… haven’t noticed).
Ok, so you want some backups. I know you’ve got a favorite, but there’s a chance it could already be taken… so come up with a list of ones you reeeeeeeally like, and see which one’s are available by entering each (one at a time, now) into the box that looks like this one:
Next, enter your account information and your package information.
(Here’s a look at some package information settings. If you check the Domain Privacy Protection box it will keep your personal address and phone number from being displayed to the public.)
You are signing up to have Bluehost be the host for your domain name. (To start a blog you need to reserve some space on the web. It’s just like paying rent.) What we love about going with Bluehost is that they’re SERIOUSLY reasonably priced, and they’ll throw in your domain name for FREE.
2. Installing WordPress
So once you finish the registration process with Bluehost, you’ll need to then install WordPress.
WordPress is super easy software used to install your website. TONS of bloggers (including me) use WordPress because of JUST how easy it is.
Here’s how to do it:
Login to Bluehost and find the Website Builders section. Click on the WordPress logo.
On the next page click the “Install” button in the “Do it yourself FREE” section.
Click the “Check Domain” button.
Check the terms and conditions box and then click the “Install Now” button.
Once you get the message that says “Your install is complete!” you’ll want to click on the “View Credentials” button and write down your Admin URL, Username, and Password. You can change these to whatever you’d like later, but you’ll need them for your first time logging in.
Type your Admin URL into your web browser. You’ll see a login screen like the one below. Enter your Username and Password you copied down from the previous step.
YAYY!!! You are now logged into your VERY OWN blog!! SQUEEEEEEEEE!!
3. Picking Your Theme
SO CRAZY COOL! You are an official blog owner! (Feeling kindo’ slick, aren’t ya?)
You’re just about ready to rock and roll… but before you get to postin’ your passion, you first want to make this blog look how you’d like it to.
Which means, you need to pick a theme (a pre-designed template that will make all o’ your stuff look NICE).
WordPress has tons of FREE WordPress themes to pick from. You can scan through the options here.
See! Easy Peasy! And now you’ve gone and done it!
But if you haven’t… ’cause all of this still seems a bit intimidating to you, or you’ve already set up your blog and are ready to take it to the next level (like upgrade it a bit, or customize it in ways you can’t figure out on your own), we highly recommend the web development company Stovox. They’re very reasonably priced and their customer service is STELLAR. They’ll set you up with exactly what you want without you having to figure anything out on your own! It’s the company we used to upgrade our website just recently, and who we have on retainer to help us make any changes along the way.
Ok, it’s time to start sharing your passion with the world and making your presence known!
‘Cause you’ve got stuff in there. And it’s about time to get it out. Knaw I’m sayin’? Xx
