FREE TUTORIAL FEATURE, NUM-BAH ONE!!!
Here we go, y’all! I am officially launching McGreevy Cakes’ blog, Free Tutorial Feature! WAAWHOOOO!!
But… where to begin? That’s always the hardest, isn’t it?
So I’ve been thinkin’… (I know, my brain hurts… don’t rub it in) and I’ve come to a couple o’conclusions. First, it’s decided that you beginners out there need a bit of a “curriculum” I think. You need to know where to start… HOW to start. Ya need the BASICS.
So I’ma gonna give them to you… at the beginning of each week. I’m going to start a little “beginner” series of tutorials, so that you feel EMPOWERED rather than OVERWHELMED. ‘Cause I know, sometimes it’s like, “Uh yeah, that’s just lovely and all, but I could never do it. So why would I even bother to read how? Cut me some slack here, wouldya?”
Right? Well, just call me Ms. (Pink & Sparkly) Slack Cutter, ’cause I got a whole mini-program comin’ your way, newbies! Gonna show you how YOU at home, even though ya think ya just ain’t got it (but secretly wish ya’ did), CAN do it. And do it WELL.
At the BEGINNING of each week.
Now, at the END of each week (like today, in case, ya know… you’re confused by my never ending, ridiculousness), I’ll feature a different kindo’ tutorial. Some more advanced, some intermediate… some just plain CUTE for those of you who’ve been around the pond a few times. (Let’s face it, we ALL need a little “cute” in our lives every now and then. Even those of us with the roughest edges. Oh yeah, you KNOW it’s true… stop rollin’ those eyes, ya toughie.)
Sooo, maybe I should shut UP now and get to it, right??? GEESH. K. Gettin’…
Modeling Faces on Figures!!
Alright, I wanted to start off the free tutorial features, today, with a few videos that I value HUGELY.
These tutorials helped change the way I modeled the faces of my figures. It was the gateway that took me from the more simple (though, simple done well can be EXTREMELY cute and impacting, don’t get me wrong) to the much more intricate that I was dying to master.
Well, I still have by NO MEANS mastered it… I’m always tweaking, here… changing up a technique, there… trying to put my own spin/style on my sculpting, but THESE videos are what gave me the confidence to even give it a shot! They gave me a place to start… to be able to SEE how it can be done.
Now, the videos are not magic. In fact, they aren’t even in English (which is the only language I know. Yes, completely lame that I’m so sadly uncultured. Mourn for me, please.) You will not watch them and suddenly be transformed into a modeling goddess, or anything like that (in case you had your li’l fingies crossed, or sonthin’.) But if you pay CLOSE attention to what, where and when Rosangela is doing what she’s doing… and what shape tools she’s using (which are very basic, btw) to do it, a whole new world will be opened up to you, I swear it!
I’m not positive what medium Rosangela is working with here… it might be fondant, but it makes no difference really. You must LISTEN TO ME, pleeease… MODELING CHOCOLATE will work in nearly the same way for you! (I stress that ’cause I really didn’t believe it myself, at first.) (Click here to watch my video on how to easily make your own modeling chocolate!)
(Here’s another fantastic one showing a bit more of the eye modeling, by Michela di Bari Dario Cercio. See their YouTube channel, here!)
Yes, it can get too warm if you’re a bit hot handed, but in a “normal”, controlled climate (not ridiculously hot and humid), you can do JUST what she’s doing without any cracks or elephant skin to deal with… AND one of the crazy perks of modeling chocolate? You can BLEND IN THE SEAMS. Uh, yeah. It’s the only medium I’ll use to attemp to model like this. (Click here to see my blog post on WHY you need modeling chocolate in yo’ life!!)
I’ve added a couple other videos, below, in which the artists are working with clay, just to give you a few more examples of how you can go about getting the look you want. (Can’t seem to find any that I love done in modeling chocolate.) But remember, MODELING CHOCOLATE will work just like clay. And if you DO have some hot hands goin’ on over there, go get you some cold/ice packs to pull out o’ the freezer every now and then, and go on and cool yo’self down with them. 😉

Alright… get to watchin’ these babies, and then start practicing! That’s the key, guys… practice, practice, PRACTICE. Then, once you’ve got something you like, you can start manipulating it… changing things up a bit to make it your own. And you just may end up feelin’ like you’ve just conquered the world!! (Or at least maybe climbed Mt. Everest and lived to tell about it. Even if you DID need an oxygen mask for most of the hike.) 😉

I’m definitely planning on making my own “Modeling Faces Using Modeling Chocolate” tutorial in the near future… so you can at least see how it can be done with this magical medium of modeling chocolate. But for now… get yourself a set of modeling tools if you don’t have one already (I’ll list some good links below) and go GET YO’ GROOVE ON.
‘Cause you gonna likey… I just know it. 🙂
So tell me, gonna try some new faces, or what?
