Heeeey Youuuuuuu Guuuuuuuysssss!
(I grew up with the Goonies… what can I say?)
She needed to make a birch tree effect on cake tiers but WITHOUT using fondant or modeling chocolate.
If you’ve been hanging around me for a while, you might remember (but probably not ’cause who’s got THAT kindo’ brain space?) a loooooooooong (loooooooooooooooooong) time ago (like, practically in the stone age) I made a birch tree bark cake tutorial showing my take on creating the effect on cake tiers.
In case you missed it and you’re interested, I’ve added it here…
BUT, my version here uses modeling chocolate over ganache/buttercream.
That wasn’t going to work for Cassie’s customer, so she quickly got the creative juices flowing (ok, that’s kind of ewww when talking about cake…lets go with “got the wheels turning” instead) and came up with a brilliant idea to leave off the fondant/modeling chocolate and instead use wafer paper directly onto a buttercream finish to create a gorgeous (and much more realistic) effect!
AND THAT’S NOT EVEN THE BEST PART. (I said that really loudly, just so you know.)
The best part is that while already being completely gorgeous and seriously realistic, it’s ALSO even quicker and easier to create!!
I know. Crazy. But really real.
Cassie created her first wafer birch beauty, shared it in our Cakeheads community group as she’s been part of the Cakeheads family for years now, and mentioned how it came about.
I then asked if she would come onto a Cakeheads live episode to show us how she did it…and she agreed!
We recorded the live episode (as we do with all live episodes) and added it to the library of tutorials on Cakeheads.com (as we do with all recorded espisodes 🙂 ) so that we now have Cassie’s tutorial to refer back to anytime we need to create this beautiful (and easy!! Did I mention that?) effect on one of our cakes.
Check out more of Cassie’s beautiful work, HERE!
If you want to check out Cassie’s wafer paper birch tree cake tutorial, come join our Cakeheads family.
We’d love and be honored to have you with us, and I’m completely certain that you won’t regret a single day of hanging out with that fabulous group of people that I get to spend a little bit of time with each day.
They’re seriously creative, tons of fun, and the greatest support system EVAH. I love them to the moon.
(And maybe even to the moon AGAIN. )
K, talk soon! A new cake design coming atchya next week… Xx
