My first car cake.
I don’t know guys… I’m comin’ up blank, here. It seems that I just don’t have much to say about this one. (ME. I know, right?) But the well is just… well, DRY right now.
I WILL tell you straight up… I DON’T like making cars. That’s something I’ve learned. It just takes so darn LONG to get things clean, and you need to be so darn PRECISE, that it nearly killed me.
I used my color shapers on this baby like they were goin’ outta STYLE, and I still wasn’t completely happy in the end.
Well, that’s a bold face lie. I actually wasn’t happy at ALL in the end, but I’m not supposed to talk about why and when I don’t like my cakes. (I’m certain that’s written in some “art etiquette” book, somewhere.)
So, I’m gonna shove that folder of my brain way up into the attic (to hang with my tied up tomboy for a bit), make like Elsa in the snow, and just LET IT GO. Turn away. And slam the door. (She looked MUCH better doing it, though. Phooey.)
Ok, that being said (and let go) I did use a couple of techniques that were very helpful when carving this beast, *ahem*, this shape. Also, I used modeling chocolate to cover it, and I had gotten a couple of really cool examples of how mod choc is just a little bit like magic, captured on film for you.
Just in case ya wanted to see.
(And no, it didn’t show the perpetual scowl that was etched into my face the entire time.)
But when I say “I had” I mean “I no longer do have” ’cause the footage was all on the hard drive that I dropped and didn’t have backed up and that broke ’cause it was so STUPID. (Was that a li’l bit of a run on, there?)
SOOOO, at the end of the day, though I have learned a very PROFOUND lesson about backing up my work… and how hard it is to NOT cry over dropped hard drives, I still have no video for you.
All I have are a few progress pics. And since the likelihood of me ever deciding to make a car cake again are like… well, ZERO, I’m afraid this is all I’ll probably EVER have for you on the forsaken subject.
Moral of this story…
Don’t drop your hard drive.
And don’t make a car cake unless you’re riding some sort of HAPPY high. (No drugs allowed.)
(Well, those are MY two morals, at least. 😉 ) Xx
Some progress pics…
rough ganached, carved cake about 16″ long
Smoothed with a hot metal spatula
Some modeling chocolate embellishments added first…
(And placed on a bit of foam board to raise it up just a smidge.)
Covered in modeling chocolate and smoothed.
The beginning of details added.
The finished beast that nearly broke me.
