“Being part of this group completely changed the way I’m looking at many things now. I’m so glad I found you Shawna that day on YouTube. I’m so happy to “meet” everyone here. Thank you so much for inspiration, for support and for just sometimes for making my day.” – N

“I’m a member of quite a few online groups and tutorial sites, but Shawna’s Cakeheads is by far the one that’s the most interactive and helpful. I’m on daily. She truly makes you feel special! Even to us newbies to the cake business.” – A
“Wasn’t sure I could add another online school but I spend by far the most time here and have learned soooo many things already!” – T
“I know I’ve said it before and I’m pretty sure I’ll say it again and I say it all the time to my family “this is the best group Eva!!” To be apart of a group that is so helpful and positive is such an incredible feeling. To be able to learn so much from everyone is inspiring and just to be able to talk cake with people that get the rush and the lows is awesome! Thanks Shawna and everyone! ” – A
“Before Cakeheads, I felt very lonely in my world of cake. No one to get advice from, no one to ask for help from, no colleagues to show my work to and no one to share my little knowledge with…
but now I have a place where people inspire me with their beautiful cakes, and creations, shower me with their help and kindness, give me confidence about my cake and little talent, have my best interest in mind and love to see me grow. I am no longer afraid to share anything either.
I have learned more in the past month from the classes and tips and pictures and live seminars at Cakeheads, than ever.” -H
(The above are unsolicited quotes made by members of the private Cakeheads community group.)
It’s been a little over seven months since we first launched Cakeheads, our online cake school, and I thought it about time that I shared with you a little bit of what’s making my heart kinda burst with joy.
We (my husband, Thomas, and I) had the idea of starting an online cake school several years ago… but I just wasn’t ready back then. I didn’t have a complete vision for it, which caused us to stick the idea up on the back shelf of our brains “until further notice.”
And I wasn’t positive “further notice” would actually ever happen.
But slowly, a new idea started nagging at the back of my brain. (Maybe right next to where I shelved the school idea. Maybe THAT’S how they became BFFs.)
The idea actually came from my inbox. (My ugly, scary, hot mess of an inbox.)
My inbox, you see, was (*cough* is) chock full of questions.
Any and every question you can imagine related to cake decorating submitted from people all around the world trying to figure out how to fix something they were (or still are) stuck on.
People needing a little bit of help to be able to move forward.
And the reason I call my inbox “scary” is because of the nightmares I’d have stemming from the stored up guilt I’d accumulated over time from not being able to answer everyone’s questions… to help them out.
(We have four kiddos we’re in the middle of raising, and between that and making cakes AND running a blog, there was zero time left for…anything.
But I KNOW that feeling.
Being desperate for an answer to the dag nabbit problem (AHEM, problemsssss) that you just can’t figure out.
Wishing you had someone on call who you could fire some questions off to and finally get some solutions from.
And that’s when the new idea formed in my brain… met the cake school idea… and have now become besties forever.
WHAT IF we could set up an online school that has the traditional instructional videos covering the basics of cake decorating all the way up to the advanced, more intense projects…
but most importantly has a thriving group of cake decorators sharing their experiences with each other, asking questions, giving answers, providing support…helping each other troubleshoot like a BOSS?!
If we could set THAT up, well… that would be something.
And that was the idea behind Cakeheads.
Today, I am BEYOND thrilled to report that the Cakeheads community group has far exceeded my the hopes I had for it!
The group has not only become a place where there are hundreds of experienced cake decorators helping each other troubleshoot, sharing tips they’ve picked up, tools they’ve come across, and inspiration for future projects,
but it’s become almost like a family, too.
I know that maybe sounds cheesy and a bit dramatic, but it’s really real.
Knowing how much it’s helping people and giving them the confidence to step out there and take their skills to the next level, having a support system to help them figure things out along the way is seriously filling my heart with joy! And watching the new friendships that have formed among the members is just a fantastic added bonus.
I so very much love the people in this group and look forward to checking in each day with them.
So, like I said… my heart’s kinda bursting over here. Xx
OH, and a bunch of the members in the group decided we needed to do a collaboration project together (which made me smile hugely)…
so we voted on a theme… “fairy tales” being the winner, and those of us who could fit it into our schedules each created a cake based upon that theme!
The Cakeheads collaboration, spearheaded by the fabulous Lisa Cousineau of Creative Cake Designs by Lisa, will be showcasing their work within the next couple of weeks , online (and I’ll post about it on my McGreevy Cakes Facebook page when they do, so stay tuned over there)!
This is my contribution to the collaboration, which I’m releasing slightly early ’cause I made it into the newest tutorial on Cakeheads.com.
Access to the full video tutorial on how to make this cake, and a place to find instruction, support and joy learning the art of cake decorating…
