She wants to be a ballerina.
I know what you’re thinking. “Don’t all little girls?”
But no. Not in our family.
Her two sisters each had that dream job on their list for about two weeks when they were younger, and then they forgot all about the foofy pink tutus and pretty, ribbon tied slippers and swiftly moved on to the next thing that caught their fancy.
But not my little pixie.
She loudly proclaimed one early morning about four years ago that she WAS going to be a ballerina.
And she hasn’t stopped dancing around the house and talking about it since.
I ignored it for a little while.
(Ok, for a looong while.)
Don’t get me wrong, I love ballerinas as much as the next girly girl. Heck, I even took dance class when I was a kid for ten years straight!
But some part of me was just kindo’ hoping we could bypass the dance classes and recitals with our girls.
I mean, YOU know how busy life gets. And I guess I just didn’t want to add this particular can of worms to the list.
But here’s the thing… we’ve all got something inside. (SomeTHINGS, even.)
Something that lights our fire. That gets us going and makes us feel alive.
Something(s) GOOD, that I personally think was put there in us as a “gift” so to speak.
Mine is different from yours, and yours is different from the guy’s next door.
Some seem so grand and noble… and some seem so trivial and inconsequential.
But I’ve come to believe and can truly see that each and every one of them is as of equal importance to the life of the person who holds it, and to this world as a whole.
‘Cause whether you’re cracking top secret codes to help maintain the security of the nation… or making special cakes for your family and friends,
if it makes you come alive and brings you some peace and joy in the process, it has the power to help turn you into one heck of a bright light in this often dark and dreary world.
And when we’re standing next to someone whose light is spilling into our space, it helps us see a way through our darkness and into what’s in our own heart, giving us hope for “life” of our own filled with peace and joy.
Light is catchy.
And so very important.
So what am I saying?
I’m saying I think I see some dance classes in our future.
‘Cause if being a ballerina someday is what’s going to bring my little girl to life, lighting her and those around her up…
then I’m all in.
And I will be her very loudest cheerleader, each step of the way.
You know? Xx
